Failed to Connect to Relayer error

Overview​

If you encounter the WalletConnect error:

Failed to connect to relayer

it usually means your network connection is blocking or throttling the WebSocket relay service that WalletConnect uses. Using a VPN can help bypass these network restrictions. This guide walks you through installing and activating NordVPN, one of the most reliable VPN services, on your desktop or mobile device.

Prerequisites​

  • A valid NordVPN subscription. If you don't have one yet, sign up at NordVPN.
  • Administrative rights on your computer or device.

1. Download NordVPN​

  1. Visit the NordVPN Downloads page and choose your operating system.
  2. Click Download.

2. Install NordVPN​

Windows/macOS/Linux​

  1. Locate the downloaded installer file (.exe on Windows, .dmg on macOS, or package manager instructions on Linux).
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Once installed, launch the NordVPN application.

iOS/Android​

  1. The app installs automatically after download.
  2. Open the NordVPN app from your home screen.

3. Activate NordVPN​

  1. On the first launch, you will see a login screen.
  2. Enter your NordVPN account email and password.
  3. Complete any two-factor authentication (2FA) if you have it enabled.
  4. Upon successful login, you'll see the NordVPN dashboard.

4. Connect to a VPN Server​

  1. In the NordVPN dashboard, click Quick Connect to connect to the fastest available server.
  2. Alternatively, choose a specific country or specialty server from the server list.
  3. Wait until the status changes to Connected and displays a new IP address.

Tip: For the best WalletConnect performance, choose a server location near your region to minimize latency.

5. Retry WalletConnect​

  1. Return to your dApp.
  2. Attempt to connect your wallet again.
  3. The VPN-encrypted tunnel should now allow the WebSocket connection to the relayer.

Note: While this guide uses NordVPN as an example, you can use any reputable VPN provider to resolve WalletConnect connection issues.
